Μαρτυρία comes from μάρτυς, the ancient Greek word for witness, joined with the abstract noun suffix -ία. The word entered Christian usage to describe the testimony of witnesses to events or faith, and it later gave English the word martyr through church Latin. The origin of μάρτυς itself is uncertain, and some scholars treat it as pre-Greek rather than inherited from Proto-Indo-European.
