Etymology
Δίαιτα is already found in ancient Greek with the broad sense of a way of life or mode of living. Hippocratic medical writers narrowed it to a prescribed regimen of food, exercise, and habits kept for health. Its deeper origin is disputed. Beekes lists it as of unknown, possibly pre-Greek, origin, despite ancient attempts to link it to words like αἶσα (lot, portion). The word later passed through Latin diaeta into English as diet.
