Etymology
Καράβι comes from Byzantine Greek καράβιον, a diminutive of the ancient word κάραβος. Κάραβος first meant a horned beetle or a spiny crustacean, and later also a light, fast ship, likely from a resemblance in shape. Over centuries the diminutive form replaced the older word and became the standard term for a ship in Modern Greek. The same root passed through Latin carabus into English as caravel.
