Etymology
Φρούριο comes from φρουρά, meaning guard or garrison, with the noun-forming suffix -ιο added to mark a place. Φρουρά itself derives from φρουρός, a guard, which goes back to the compound πρό (before, in front) plus a form of ὁράω (to see, watch). So a φρούριο was originally understood as a place kept under watch. The word has stayed in everyday use since ancient Greek, largely unchanged in meaning.
