Etymology
φρουρός descends from Ancient Greek φρουρός, a contracted form of the older πρόορος, built from πρό (before, in front) and a root tied to ὁράω (to see). The sense is literally someone who watches ahead or looks out in front. The same base gives φρουρά, the noun for a garrison or watch duty.
