Etymology
Συναίσθημα is built from the prefix συν- ("together, with") and αἴσθημα ("a thing perceived, a sensation"), itself from the verb αἰσθάνομαι, "to perceive, to feel." The compound first meant something closer to "a perception that arises with awareness," and over time it settled into the ordinary Greek word for an emotion. The same root αἰσθ- gives English "aesthetic" and "anesthesia," both about perception or its absence.
