αποκτώ comes from the prefix από- ("from, away") added to the ancient verb κτάομαι, "to acquire" or "to procure for oneself." The ancient middle-voice verb survives in modern Greek nouns like κτήμα ("property") and κτήση ("possession"). The prefix από- here marks the result of the action, the point at which something moves from not being yours to being yours. The origin of κτάομαι itself is not securely traced, so no reliable Indo-European root can be given.
