Etymology
Κτήμα comes from the ancient verb κτάομαι, meaning to acquire or gain. The suffix -μα turns the verb into a noun naming the result of the action, so κτήμα literally means the thing acquired. Over time the word narrowed in everyday use toward land and real estate, though it can still cover any possession. Scholars are not certain about the deeper origin of κτάομαι itself, so no reliable Indo-European root can be given.
