Etymology

αναπτύσσω is built from the prefix ανα- (up, back, again) and πτύσσω (to fold). The original sense was literal: to unfold something, like a scroll or a piece of cloth. Over time the meaning shifted from the physical act of unfolding to the abstract sense of growth and development, much as English speakers talk about a plan or an argument that unfolds.
