Etymology
The word joins αὐτός, meaning self, with προσώπως, an adverbial form built on πρόσωπον, meaning face or person. πρόσωπον itself comes from πρός (toward) plus ὤψ (eye, face), so it originally meant what is turned toward the viewer. The compound literally points to acting with one's own face present, and it settled into the sense of doing something in person rather than through a representative.
