The word comes from Ancient Greek ἤπιος, meaning gentle, kind, or mild. It appears already in Homer, often describing a calm temperament or a soft approach toward others. Its deeper origin is not settled among scholars, and some linguists suspect it may come from a pre-Greek substrate word. The form has stayed largely unchanged into Modern Greek.
