Etymology
The adjective comes from μάγειρος, the ancient Greek word for cook or butcher, joined with the common adjectival suffix -ικός, meaning pertaining to. So μαγειρικός literally means pertaining to a cook. Greek lexicographers link μάγειρος to the verb μάσσω, to knead, since early cooks also prepared dough. Modern Greek kept this adjective for anything related to cooking or cuisine.
