Etymology

Ικανός comes from Ancient Greek ἱκανός, an adjective built on the verb ἱκνέομαι, meaning to reach or arrive at. Something ἱκανός originally reached the required measure, so it counted as sufficient or adequate. Over time the sense narrowed toward a person's capability, and Modern Greek kept that meaning largely intact.
