Etymology
Παγωτό is the substantivized neuter of the passive participle of παγώνω, meaning to freeze. Παγώνω itself derives from πάγος, the ancient Greek word for frost or ice, which in turn traces to the same root as the verb πήγνυμι, to fix or congeal. So παγωτό literally means the frozen thing.
