Etymology
In Ancient Greek, πάγος first named a fixed, solid thing: a rocky crag or peak, and by extension frost. It comes from the verb πήγνυμι, meaning to fix, fasten, or make solid. Modern Greek narrowed the word to its most common solid form of water: ice. The old sense survives in the name Άρειος Πάγος, the Hill of Ares in Athens, now the name of Greece's supreme court.
