Etymology
The word comes from ancient Greek ὁμοσπονδία, built from ὁμός, meaning "same" or "common," and σπονδή, meaning "libation" or, by extension, "treaty." In antiquity, treaties were sealed with a ritual libation, so σπονδή came to mean the pact itself. A group bound by a common treaty was an ὁμοσπονδία, and the modern word kept that sense of union under a shared agreement.
