The word comes from ancient Greek ἔκπληκτος, a verbal adjective built from ἐκπλήσσω, meaning to strike out of one's senses. The verb combines the prefix ἐκ- (out) with πλήσσω (to strike, to hit). The image is of a blow so sharp it knocks a person out of their normal state of mind, leaving them astonished.
