Etymology

The word comes from ίππος, the ancient Greek word for horse, joined with the agent-forming suffix -ότης, seen also in δεσπότης (master). It literally means someone defined by his horse, a horseman of rank. The sense narrowed over time to the medieval mounted warrior, and later broadened again to a man of chivalrous conduct.
