Etymology

Greek καραμπίνα comes from Italian carabina, which in turn comes from French carabine. The French word goes back to carabin, a term used in the 1500s for a mounted skirmisher or light-cavalry soldier armed with a short firearm. The origin of carabin itself is disputed and not securely traced further back, so no Indo-European root can be given.
