Etymology

Μάρτυρας is the modern form of Ancient Greek μάρτυς, genitive μάρτυρος, meaning one who bears witness or gives testimony. Its ultimate origin is disputed; some scholars link it to an old root for remembering, but others treat it as a word of unclear, possibly pre-Greek origin, so no PIE root can be stated with confidence. The same ancient word passed into Church usage for someone who testifies to their faith by dying for it, and from there into English as martyr.
