Etymology

Παράδοση comes from the ancient verb παραδίδωμι, built from the prefix παρά (alongside, over) and δίδωμι (to give). The verb meant to hand something over, whether an object, a duty, or knowledge, and the noun παράδοσις named that act of handing over. Over time the sense narrowed toward what gets handed down across generations, which is how the modern word came to mean tradition, while still keeping the literal sense of delivery.
