Etymology
The word comes from Ancient Greek οἰκονομικός, meaning skilled in household management. It derives from οἰκονομία (oikonomia), household management, itself from οἶκος (house) and νόμος (law, rule). The sense narrowed and widened over centuries from domestic management to the management of a whole economy, and today the adjective covers both economic and, informally, cheap or thrifty.
