Etymology
Ancient Greek ἠλίθιος meant foolish, silly, or worthless. Its origin is not settled, and scholars have not traced it with confidence to a Proto-Indo-European root. The word already carried its core sense of stupidity in Classical Greek, and Modern Greek kept that meaning largely unchanged.
