Etymology

Ζήτημα comes from the ancient Greek verb ζητέω, meaning to seek or inquire. The suffix -μα turns a verb into a noun naming the result of the action. So a ζήτημα is literally the thing being sought or inquired into, a question still open for discussion. The deeper origin of ζητέω is not securely traced to a Proto-Indo-European root, so no outside cognates are listed here.
