The word goes back to Ancient Greek στάδιον, which named a fixed unit of length, about 180 meters, and then the running track built to that length. The track sense later gave the word its modern meaning of a sports venue, while the idea of a fixed measured span also produced the abstract sense of a stage or phase in a process. The root is the same one found in ίστημι, the ancient verb for standing or setting something firm.
