Word family
Etymology
στάση descends from Ancient Greek στάσις (stásis) 'a standing, placing, position,' a verbal noun built on the root of ἵστημι (hístēmi) 'to make stand, to set.' From the core idea of 'a standing' the word branched into 'halt/stop' (hence a transit stop), 'bodily posture' and 'attitude/stance,' and even 'factional standing' → 'sedition, uprising.' It traces back to PIE *steh₂- 'to stand,' the same root behind Latin stāre and English stand.
