Etymology

Απώλεια descends from Ancient Greek ἀπώλεια 'destruction, loss', formed on the verb ἀπόλλυμι 'to destroy utterly, lose', a compound of ἀπό 'away, completely' and ὄλλυμι 'to destroy, perish'. The verbal root is traced to Proto-Indo-European *h₃elh₁- 'to destroy, annihilate'. The same ancient noun supplies the theological term 'apoleia' (perdition) familiar from the New Testament.
