Etymology

A Modern Greek compound verb derived from πυροβόλος / πυροβόλο ('fire-throwing; cannon, firearm'), itself from πῦρ ('fire') plus the o-grade root βολ- of βάλλω ('to throw, cast'). The literal sense is 'to throw/cast fire', which came to mean discharging a firearm. The πυρ- element continues PIE *péh₂wr̥ 'fire', the same root behind English 'fire'.
