Etymology
From Medieval Greek γειτονία, an abstract/collective noun built on Ancient Greek γείτων (geítōn) 'neighbor' with the suffix -ία. The modern form γειτονιά arose through synizesis (-ία > -ιά). The sense moved from 'the body of neighbors' to 'the area they inhabit'. The origin of γείτων itself is uncertain and is often considered Pre-Greek.
