Etymology
Derived from the ancient Greek noun νεῦρον (neûron) 'sinew, tendon, nerve' plus the productive adjectival suffix -ικός 'pertaining to'. Originally meaning 'of the nerves/sinews', it came to describe a person whose nerves are easily set on edge. The same νεῦρον underlies the international scientific vocabulary of 'neuron', 'neurology' and 'neurosis'.
