Etymology

Modern Greek ουρανός inherits Ancient Greek οὐρανός, meaning 'sky, heaven, vault of the sky'. In myth Οὐρανός was the personified Sky, consort of Gaia (Earth). The deeper Proto-Indo-European origin is debated and has no secure reconstruction, so it is often treated as of uncertain etymology.
