Etymology

Ουράνιος comes from ουρανός, the Greek word for sky or heaven, with the adjectival suffix -ιος attached to mean "of the sky" or "of heaven". The origin of ουρανός itself is not settled. Some scholars link it to a pre-Greek substrate word rather than a clear Indo-European root, so no solid reconstruction exists. The word also survives as the name of the god Ouranos and the planet Uranus.
