Etymology
Αναθεματισμένος is the passive participle of αναθεματίζω, meaning to curse or excommunicate. That verb comes from the noun ανάθεμα, an anathema, something formally set apart and condemned. Ανάθεμα in turn goes back to ἀνατίθημι, to set up or dedicate, built from ανά, up, plus τίθημι, to place. Over time the church sense of formal condemnation loosened into an everyday word for something damned or annoying.
