Etymology
Τάφος derives from the verb θάπτω 'to bury' (aorist ἔθαψα), going back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to bury, perform funeral rites'. The o-grade noun originally referred to the burial and the funeral itself, and later came to mean the grave or tomb. It is related within Greek to τάφρος 'ditch, trench'.
