Etymology
From Ancient Greek μανθάνω (manthánō) 'to learn, understand, perceive', whose aorist stem μαθ- supplied the modern present μαθαίνω. The same root yields μάθημα 'lesson, that which is learned', the source of English 'mathematics'. It is traced to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning 'to direct one's mind, become aware'.
