Etymology
Inherited from Ancient Greek ἄρθρον (árthron) 'joint, limb', a derivative of the verb ἀραρίσκω 'to fit together, join'. Ancient grammarians extended the 'joint' metaphor to the grammatical 'article', the small word that joints a noun into the sentence. Modern Greek keeps both the anatomical sense (in compounds) and developed the senses of a written piece, a scientific paper, and a numbered provision of a law.
