Etymology
Πριγκίπισσα is built from πρίγκιπας, the Greek word for prince, plus the feminine suffix -ισσα. Πρίγκιπας itself entered Greek from Latin princeps (genitive principis), a title used in the Byzantine world for a ruler or high noble. The suffix -ισσα is a native Greek device for forming female counterparts of titles, seen also in βασίλισσα (queen) from βασιλιάς (king).
