Etymology

English "gin" is a shortened form of "geneva," an English alteration of Dutch "jenever," which meant juniper and named the juniper-flavored spirit. Greek borrowed the short English form directly in the 20th century, writing it τζιν to represent the English sound with the Greek letters τζ. The word entered Greek as an unadapted loan and stayed indeclinable, as many recent borrowings do.
