Etymology

Αεροδρόμιο is a modern Greek compound built from αέρας (air) and δρόμος (course, track, running). Greek roots supplied the term 'aerodrome' that entered English and French in the early twentieth century as aviation developed. Modern Greek then formed αεροδρόμιο on the same pattern, using the neuter suffix -ιο. The word reads literally as an 'air-course', a place where aircraft run their course.
