Etymology

The verb combines the prefix κατά (down, against) with δικάζω, to judge, itself from δίκη, meaning justice or a legal case. Δίκη traces to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to show or point out, the same idea behind pointing a finger of judgment at someone. The prefix κατά adds a sense of force directed downward or against the person judged, giving the compound its meaning of passing a sentence against someone.
