Etymology
Δίκαιος derives from δίκη, the ancient Greek word for custom, judgment, or justice, joined with the adjectival suffix -αιος. Δίκη itself traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning to point out or show, the same idea behind Latin words for speaking and pointing. Over time δίκη narrowed to mean a legal case or the principle of right order, and δίκαιος came to describe a person or act that follows that order.
