Word family
Etymology
The word builds on the verb κουράζω, to tire. Most Greek dictionaries trace κουράζω back to Byzantine Greek κουράζομαι, itself borrowed from Latin curare, to take care of or treat medically. Over time the sense shifted from undergoing treatment to being worn out by it, and eventually to plain tiredness. The suffix -τικός then turns the tiredness-verb into an adjective meaning causing that state.
