Etymology

Επιχείρημα comes from the verb επιχειρώ, meaning to undertake or set one's hand to a task. That verb combines the prefix επί (upon, toward) with χείρ (hand). The result noun suffix -μα turned the verb into a noun for the product of the action: first an undertaking or attempt, later, in reasoning and rhetoric, a point put forward to support a case.
