Etymology
Ζωγραφιά comes from ζωγράφος, meaning painter, plus the noun-forming suffix -ιά. Ζωγράφος itself is an ancient compound of ζῷον, living being, and the root of γράφειν, to scratch or draw. The original idea was someone who draws living creatures from life. Over time the compound narrowed to mean simply painter, and the suffix -ιά turned the painter's craft into the concrete product: the picture itself.
