Etymology
Μιλάω comes from the medieval Greek verb ομιλώ, meaning to converse or keep company with someone. That verb in turn comes from the ancient noun όμιλος, meaning a crowd or gathering. Over time the unstressed initial vowel dropped in everyday speech, and ομιλώ shortened to μιλώ, later μιλάω. The formal form ομιλώ still exists in written and official Greek.
