Χαιρέτισμα comes from the verb χαιρετίζω, meaning to greet or salute. That verb in turn comes from χαίρω, to rejoice or be glad, the same root behind the ancient greeting χαῖρε, literally an instruction to rejoice, used the way Latin speakers used salve. The suffix -ισμα is the standard way Greek turns -ίζω verbs into neuter nouns naming the act or result, so χαιρέτισμα is literally the product of the act of greeting. The deeper origin of χαίρω itself is debated among specialists, so no further root should be assumed.
