Φαρμακείο is built from φάρμακο, the Greek word for drug or medicine, plus the suffix -είο, which marks a place or establishment, as in γραφείο (office) or ταχυδρομείο (post office). So the word literally means a place for medicines. The root φάρμακον is ancient, already used by Homer, but its deeper origin is disputed among linguists and no secure Indo-European root has been established.
