Etymology
Τσεκούρι entered Greek as a loanword from Turkish during the long period of Ottoman rule, part of a large layer of everyday tool vocabulary borrowed at that time. It largely replaced the older Greek word for axe, πέλεκυς, which survives mainly in formal or literary use. Because the source is Turkish rather than an Indo-European language, no Indo-European root applies here.
