The word comes from ancient Greek ἔνορκος, built from the prefix ἐν- (in) and ὅρκος (oath). It described someone bound by an oath, and modern Greek narrowed the noun sense to a person sworn in to judge a case: a juror. The origin of ὅρκος itself is disputed among scholars, so no secure deeper root can be given.
