Πιστοποιητικό comes from the verb πιστοποιώ, a compound of πιστός (trustworthy, faithful) and ποιώ (to make, to do). Πιστός shares its root with πίστη (faith, trust), the same root behind Latin fidere and its English descendants such as confide and faith. Ποιώ carries the plain sense of making or doing, and its own deeper origin is uncertain. Together πιστοποιώ meant to make something trustworthy or official, and the neuter noun πιστοποιητικό came to denote the paper that does exactly that: a certificate.
